State legislatures are debating a wave of proposals that could drastically affect the daily work of healthcare teams. We keep focus on hundreds of these bills every year.

Proposals drawing the College’s attention recently include bills related to corporate practice of medicine, telehealth, prior authorization and scope of practice. Latest State Bills We Are Tracking — April 10, 2026

Alaska

House Bill (HB) 351 would enjoin Alaska in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). This compact allows registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPNs/VNs) to practice in other compact states.

Senate Bill (SB) 89 would allow physician assistants (PAs) to have independent practice.

California

Assembly Bill (AB) 2398 would authorize the Medical Board of California to issue a temporary license to recent medical school graduates who have not completed a residency to practice medicine under supervision.

Delaware

HB 191 prohibits nonhuman entities, including AI, from obtaining a license or certifications to practice certain healthcare professions in Delaware.

Illinois

HB 4779 / SB 3238 would allow advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to administer radiation to patients and supervise radiation administration

Iowa

Senate File (SF) 2190 would change the name of physician assistants to “physician associates.”

Kentucky

House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 114 is a resolution that emphasizes the importance of having a physician present in every emergency room.

Maryland

SB 915 requires individuals performing limited X-ray procedures to meet specific training, experience, and examination requirements, and mandates registration with the State Board of Physicians, including ongoing education and background checks.

Michigan

SB 303 would enjoin Michigan into the interstate medical licensure compact.

Rhode Island

SB 2458 would require the state to implement the Interstate Medical Licensure by July 1, 2026.
