What You Should KnowAbout RADS

RADS provide standardized terminology and assessment categories that help radiologists deliver clear, consistent and actionable imaging reports.

Developed by the American College of Radiology, each RADS program focuses on a specific organ system or imaging modality, reducing variability in interpretation and improving communication between radiologists and referring clinicians. By using RADS, practices enhance report clarity, support evidence‑based decision‑making and promote better patient care through uniform risk stratification and management recommendations.

In 2022, the ACR strengthened the consistency and oversight of all RADS programs by establishing the ACR RADS Steering Committee, an effort outlined in a JACR article.

More than 150 volunteer physicians contribute to the ACR Reporting and Data Systems (RADS). Each RADS committee is composed with attention to geographic diversity, a range of practice settings, and varying levels of professional experience. RADS Chairs also serve on the ACR RADS Steering Committee.

Works in Progress programs approved by the RADS steering committee because of their potential to significantly improve the standard of care. At present, there is insufficient evidence to support their use in routine practice. If you are interested in joining a works in progress, contact RADS@acr.org.

This collection of expert consensus papers are collaborative efforts developed by multi-society multidisciplinary working groups with the goal of improving communication between radiologists and referring physicians.
