ACR® and the Radiology Health Equity Coalition are helping communities take charge of their health by making cancer screening more accessible and easier to understand. Their Communities Crushing Cancer (CCC) initiative joined a local event May 30, in Southeast Washington, DC, to connect residents with lifesaving information and on-the-spot screening services. Their work highlights an important message: early cancer screening can save lives, and trusted outreach can help more people get the care they need.
At the George Washington University (GWU) Cancer Center’s Healthy Summer Block Party, a team of radiology leaders and a medical student met residents at the Max Robinson Center, a growing community health hub. The group shared clear, simple information about breast, lung and colorectal cancer screening. They answered questions and helped people better understand when and how to get screened.
The CCC team focused on meeting people where they are. They used easy-to-read materials and plain language to explain why screening matters and what steps to take next. Many residents said the outreach helped them feel more confident about their health choices.
Importantly, the event did more than raise awareness. It helped turn information into action. With on-site mammograms and ultrasounds available, the team guided residents from learning about screening to getting screened. This hands-on approach reduced fear and confusion, making it easier for people to take the next step.
The event also showed the power of partnerships. By working with groups like Whitman-Walker Health and the GW Cancer Center, the CCC initiative can be duplicated to bring education, screening and support together in one place in other communities. These efforts can help reduce cancer disparities and expand access to care in the community.
