ACR Announces 2026 Gold Medalists, Honorary Fellows

Recipients to be recognized during ACR 2026

The American College of Radiology® (ACR®) Board of Chancellors named two Gold Medalists and three Honorary Fellows in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the field of radiology and outstanding service to ACR. Honorees will be recognized during ACR 2026, the College’s annual meeting in Washington, DC, May 2–6.

The following physicians will receive the 2026 ACR Gold Medal:

Hedvig Hricak, MD, PhD, FACR, is a distinguished medical educator, authoring 800 peer-reviewed publications and 18 books. Dr. Hricak is a former chair of the ACR Gynecology Committee. She was awarded the Gold Medal by eight different medical associations and has received 23 Fellowships and Honorary Memberships. In 2002, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) of the United States and received the David Rall Medal in 2018, an award for exceptional leadership from NAM. She holds honorary doctorates from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany, and the University of Toulouse III, Paul Sabatier, in Toulouse, France. Dr. Hricak is the chair emeritus of the Radiology Department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a professor emeritus of Radiology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and at the Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
Debra Monticciolo MD, FACR, is a longtime advocate for patient access to quality imaging care, particularly breast cancer screening. Dr. Monticciolo is a former president of the ACR after serving as chair of both the ACR Commission on Quality and Safety and ACR Commission on Breast Imaging. As chair of ACR Accreditation Programs, she was instrumental in developing both the Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence and Diagnostic Imaging Centers of Excellence. Dr. Monticciolo continues to serve ACR, patients and radiology as chair of the ACR Screening Leaders Group.

The following physicians will be named 2026 ACR Honorary Fellows:

Banu Atalar, MD, is the President of the Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology (TROD) – known for her accomplishments in research and leadership supporting the education of radiation oncologists in the Middle East and Africa. She is chair of the ESTRO- National Societies Committee and a member of the Radiosurgery Society Scientific Meeting Organization Committee, and the Rare Cancer Network. Dr. Atalar is the first Turkish recipient of the ASCO International Development and Education Award, and she received the International Mentorship Award from International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
Katrine Riklund, MD, PhD, is professor and the Dean of the Medical faculty of Umea University in Umeå, Sweden. A pioneer in hybrid imaging, her immediate research applications are in rectal and prostate cancer, cognition, neurodegeneration and movement disorders. Dr. Riklund is the founding president of the European Society of Hybrid Medical Imaging. She authored more than 170 publications. Dr. Riklund served as European Society of Radiology Congress president in 2016 and received the ESR Gold Medal in 2020. She is an honorary member in RSNA and the French Society of Radiology. Dr Riklund is past president of the European Society of Radiology, the Swedish Society of Radiology and the Swedish Society of Nuclear Medicine.
Bien Soo Tan, MD, was head of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) radiology department during the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory (SARS) epidemic. The lessons learned and documented during the SARS epidemic by Dr. Tan and his team served as a resource for doctors in the United States and elsewhere during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, SGH was the first in Asia accredited by the International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology Services in recognition of its outstanding service in cancer care. Dr. Tan received the Distinguished Fellowship of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the gold medals from the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and the U.S. Society of Interventional Radiology, in acknowledgment of his leadership and achievements in interventional radiology.
